Digipak: drafts and final texts

What is a digipak?

"A digipak can be defined as a packaging for CDs normally made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs." - Music Getaway

A jewel case is often mistaken for a digipak although they are different. A jewel case is plastic, thinner and rectangular while a digipak is square, thicker and made of cardboard stock.

Reasons why digipaks are still being bought is that they resemble a vinyl, they often contain lyric booklets which is appealing to a fan, they can fin on shelves which is attractive to sellers.
A big reason they are being sold is that the distribution costs of a cd is less than vinyls.

The final product:

The outer front i used a photo taken during the filming of the performance for the music video. The graffiti background is similar to the one in my last digipak but as ‘Olivia’ is bigger it doesn’t distracts from her. The sticker was changed to a circle and it highlights the new live from studio versions of some of the songs which would be a good reason for people that could listen to her songs online to buy the CD as it has these exclusive new versions. The name of the album is a bit smaller than the artists name as it is more likely to help attract fans as the artists name is what they would be looking for. They are both written in graffiti style writing as it makes sense with the graffiti background and graffiti is used within the music video.
For the outer back i kept the graffiti font as it worked well and made the colour black to keep it simple and legible. I added more song titles as 12 is the usual amount and kept them close and the same distance apart using a ‘-‘ to distinguish the regular songs from the new live versions. I added a barcode, logos and a copyright warning for verisimilitude.
The inner right i kept simple as a photo of ‘Olivia’ walking across graffiti as a way to keep the whole digipak feeling synced.
The inner left is where the CD is. I left this quite simple as i wanted the CD to blend into the background.

For the spine i used the same graffiti font for synchronicity, added the logos and the cereal number with a plane pink background that is used in a lot of the background graffiti.

First draft:

What I did, who and what needed to be changed:

For the outside front i went with a photo from our shoot during filming the performance. I liked the colours but because they are so bright and ‘Olivia’ is so small it overpowers her and as she is our star (Richard Dyre) she needed to be the main focus.

The sticker being square ended up feeling to mature for the primary audience and there was not enough writing on it. The last note was that the title of the album and artist name is not on the front and it is not enough that the album is on the sticker.

The outer back was a continuation from the front which i thought worked well however, the titles were too few and too far apart as well as being an odd
colour.

The inner right worked well because of the editing on the picture but the lyrics didn’t make much sense because it was only for three of the many songs listed on the beck of the digipak.

I used a picture of the cake taken from the second narrative scene as the CD which was a cool idea I thought because it was round so it could look good even as a stand-alone CD. However, the cake was too blurry to use.

The spine background was a piece of the wall which i liked because the font used on top was primarily a graffiti font so it had some verisimilitude. I added a cereal  number but did not add a studio which was a mistake.

Audience feedback on my first draft:

Gerneral points:
  • Sticker being square is too serious
  • No mention of Olivia Rodrigo on the front
  • She is too small in the front panel
  • Title isn’t big enough
  • Graffiti font is nice
  • Not enough songs on the back
  • Lyrics does not make a lot of sense because it only shows three songs

  • Cake is too blurry to use
