Branding/promo package -

Branding will often we evident through the artists website (espesially the banner). Katy Perry's website shows that her 'brand' could be easily shown as pop given the bold colours and extravagant clothing. (above)

This is contrasted by Taylor Swifts website banner showing a much more serious version of her shift from her brand as a pop artist to more indie folk music. (below)

Music video day:

Our first project in media was making a video for Music Video Day, for this we decided to recreate Brittany Spears's "Baby One More Time" video with younger kids from our school and us playing the parts.

Conventions we practiced:

Because we didn't have to come up with the shots for this video ourselves his exercise really helped us pay closer attention on the convention of cinematography and editing. Essentially copying the original video made us look closely on how important the multiple shots and camera angles were to make the video look as good as possible. This video contained a lot of medium and medium close ups for the lip sinking shots and cross cutting throughout the video.

This video could also be seen as UGC (User Generated Content) as the video was made by people other than the original creator.

What went well:

Although my whole class had never worked together before, it went very smoothly which all of us being able to contribute in directing, teaching the children the choreography, and many of us acted in it.

Difficulties:

We found that lack of time was our biggest issue as we did not realise how difficult it would be to get all the children to cooperate and we did not use our shot list as much as we would have wanted which probably would have made it run smoother.

What we learnt:

  • Shot lists are very important in order to get every shot you need
  • Pre production is the most important part
  • Giving clear instructions when directing leads to the best outcome
Pixies 'Bagboy' (extra research)

  • Uses a younger man in the video to appeal to younger audience u+g
  • Uses narrative enigma, Barthes
  • Hero’s journey, Cambell, Propp - Vernalis says music videos are too elliptical to have narrative
  • Equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to prepare, new equilibrium
  • Stuart Hall- preferred reading is not clear yet
  • Handheld movement - links to Barthes action codes gives, sense of realism
  • Blue and black shirt pops out from the background which is mostly brown
  • Important to have to have one very interesting shot
  • Lyric and visual relationship - toilet shot
  • Dropping the bike and the bags on beat would have been a good choice if I was editing this
  • In our video we could do the book scene with CDs
  • His breaking of house items could connote his domestic situation
  • Use of slo mo
